There’s something pretty special about seeing a stack of school uniforms sitting on sewing machines in our community center. These aren’t just uniforms. They’re a picture of how far our New Moms Sewing Group has come. When this program began, the goal was to give young mothers an opportunity to learn a skill, build confidence, and create a path toward greater independence. Today, those same women are using the skills they’ve developed to sew school uniforms for the students GIFTS Rwanda sponsors. And this week, three primary students got to do something extra special: try on uniforms made right here in Rugarika, by women from their own community. Brigitte and Paterne were there to help, while the New Moms Sewing Group’s work was visible all around them—the students trying on their uniforms, and more finished uniforms waiting on the sewing machines in the background. This is the kind of progress we love to see. A program that started with teaching women how to sew is now creating opportunity for those women and meeting a real need in their community. One stitch at a time, these mothers are building skills, creating something of value, and showing what’s possible when people are given the opportunity to grow. And now, their work is helping children show up to school feeling prepared, confident, and proud. We’re so grateful to everyone who has helped make this journey possible.
This is sustainable change in action.
